A traditional Chinese Festival --- Mid Autumn Festival
August 15th of the lunar calendar is one of the four traditional festivals in China --- the Mid Autumn Festival. Because this festival occurs in the middle of the autumn, it is called "Mid Autumn".
Mid Autumn Festival has a very long history in China. Its traditions gradually formed over time in similar ways as other festivals. In ancient times, some places had a tradition of making sacrifices to the moon. This was practiced by emperors, and then later aristocrats and even intellectuals began to follow this practice. Gradually, the tradition of looking at the moon and making sacrifices to it became prevalent among the common folk and in this way Mid Autumn Festival became a traditional holiday in China.
So, how do Chinese people celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival? The celebration varies in different areas and among different ethnicities; however, looking at the moon and eating moon cakes is an essential part of the tradition. During Mid Autumn Festival, families and friends often get together to enjoy the moonlight and eat moon cakes. The round shape of the moon cake is said to symbolize unity.
