We don’t like gossipy neighbors, but how can we express this in Chinese?
“八卦 (Bāguà)” is the phrase that we use to describe someone who likes talking about the personal or private affairs of others. Using this phrase, Tracy could say that Mrs. Liu “真够八卦的。(Zhēn gòu bāguà de.) is really gossipy."
In fact, “八卦 (bāguà)” are eight diagrams used in Taoist cosmology to represent the fundamental principles of reality, which are seen as a range of eight interrelated concepts. “八卦图 (Bāguà tú) Bagua map” is also often used in feng shui to map a room or location, and to see how the different sections correspond to different aspects in one's life.
八卦 (bāguà)” can be used as a noun and an adjective. But it mainly refers to the definition of “gossip” when people mention this word in daily life.
When “八卦 (bāguà)” is used as a noun, it means “some gossip.”
Example:
Tā tèbié xǐhuān hé línjū liáo bāguà.
她 特别 喜欢 和 邻居 聊 八卦。
She loves to share gossip with her neighbors.
When it’s used as an adjective, it means “to be gossipy.” It describes someone that gossips about neighbor, friends, a radio show, or even celebrities.
